What's New Pussycat: A SHAKER OF MARGARITAS
What's new is that I received my author copy of A SHAKER OF MARGARITAS: HOT FLASH MOMMAS, published by Mozark Press, in the mail yesterday and I'm so impressed. For one thing, I love printed books. I've often heard authors say they wanted to sleep with their books and I know the feeling. I'm thankful to the digital readers out there but I'm definitely a print kinda gal.
In fact, I've loved the printing process since I was a kid penning my first piece of fiction. I folded the paper together to make it look like a book, and wondered how in the world it ever actually became a printed book. In the first week of my junior high journalism class I found out when we toured the print shop, and I've been in love with printed books and the printing process ever since. So much so, I worked in the printing/publishing industry for years in San Francisco - before the high-tech world of Silicon Valley lured me away.
So, what is the future of the printed book? Bob Mayer has been posting some interesting articles about the future of the printed book going the way of Starbucks - just when they pronounce the printed book as dead, it will make a resurgence in boutique, niche book stores. As a lover of books and coffee way before Starbuck's, I'm excited to think of that kind of future.
One thing I love about A SHAKER OF MARGARITAS is that it's a much-needed fun, virtual girlfriend experience - so needed in today's darker world. So, get your girlfriend weekend on by reading A SHAKER OF MARGARITAS: HOT FLASH MOMMAS - available in print and Kindle - don't forget to check out my story VIVA LAS VEGAS, and then continue your Vegas journey in THE TOM JONES CLUB - available on Kindle now and Print coming early 2011.
Now it's time to play a little Tom Jones.

Kindle Release Day for THE TOM JONES CLUB
Breaking news: THE TOM JONES CLUB is now available on amazon.com for the Kindle.
What is THE TOM JONES CLUB? It's romance, it's chick lit, it's a bit of a mystery. It's where Orlando meets Las Vegas, it's Rat Pack, it's Mad Men. It's wine, food, fun from the entertainment capital of the world. And there's even a cowboy or two...
In the end, you decide what it is. But Lucky thinks it's all about her - maybe because she insisted this book find a publisher. And here's what she has to say:
I can tell what kind of a man he is by the wine he drinks. – Lucky Stryker, International Wine Sales Rep, The Tom Jones Club
Italian: Sexy (40 percent) and stylish (37 percent)
French: Pretentious (76 percent) and high-maintenance (65 percent)
Champagne with orange juice: Metrosexuals, secure in their manhood
I'll be curious how THE TOM JONES CLUB compares to REAL WOMEN WEAR RED. So, if you've read both, which one did you prefer? Who did you most want to be - Cyn or Lucky? Why?
I love reader feedback, so please feel free to start a discussion here or on my shiny, new author page on amazon.com. Reviews are welcome, too.
Thanks,
Kathy

The Book Review Club: The Accidental Billionaires: The FoundingofFacebook
My book review for the November meeting of "The Book Review Club" is The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook by Ben Mezrich. The Social Network movie was based on the book. Written like a novel based on a lot of stories pieced together, it's a fast read - I read it on the flight from Orlando to Vegas. I have mixed feelings about it, but then I have mixed feelings about Facebook. But reading the book and then analyzing what I wanted from Facebook helped me sort things out. When I lived and breathed the high-tech world of Silicon Valley, I took pride in being a part of the cutting edge of technology. I was surrounded by really bright people and it challenged me in a positive way to reach and grow professionally. The CEO of Cadence at that time was the best leader of a company I'd ever worked under and his openness created an open, creative culture throughout the company (behind-the-scenes he definitely played hard ball). But when I ventured out from the corporate staff world to launch my career as a writing consultant, I felt the pain of working under more than one CEO with a well-earned reputation for being a real *ss. There were billboards at the time where they bragged about it.
So, I'm not surprised by the picture painted of Mark Zuckerberg. And while I've relished being on the cutting edge of technology for most of my professional career, I am not enamored with Facebook. Never mind the dishonesty of how it came to be (not the first to have questionable beginnings), how much of a control freak Facebook is (from a designer's POV, I hate it), or how addicting it is, the real problem I've run into is that most people don't know how to use technology. "Just because you can doesn't mean you should" is my new motto. The main problem I have with so much of this "social media" hype/fad/cultism is that many don't understand there's a difference between openness, secrecy, and privacy. (I wrote about the problem with photos here and tips for writers on how to approach Facebook here.)
Don't get me wrong - there are definite benefits to using it; otherwise, it wouldn't be so popular. And businesses feel the need to have a Facebook presence so that they won't be left out, and as an author, I also have a Facebook page. But other people try it and then leave it, realizing it isn't for them. Not everybody is a group person or an online person or a public person. It'll be interesting to see how long Facebook stays on top or what the next big thing to come along and replace it will be. Because one thing that our culture loves more than anything is the next new, shiny thing.

Lucky and The Tom Jones Club
When Lucky arrives in Las Vegas to score her last business deal before starting a new life, the last thing she expects is to be pulled into the web of a woman with claims on the past.
Until that flight to Vegas, I was the girl who looked like a million bucks on the outside, but felt like the poor starving girl on the inside.
Until that flight to Vegas, I was the girl who had no trouble attracting men, but who went home alone.
Until that flight to Vegas, I was the girl who never had a “best friend forever”--never trusting women--or men for that matter. But all of that changed when I met Mona and The Tom Jones Club.
When old Vegas meets new Vegas and the past meets the present, Lady Luck brings together the women of the Tom Jones Club. Believing that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” they discover a secret too big to be contained in Las Vegas, and their lives are changed forever.
Available now at Bookstrand, Mobipocket, and Amazon.com for the Kindle. Coming Soon to amazon.com in print (Feb-April, 2011).
